Child Health Web Site Launched In Partnership With Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

One of the most frustrating things about becoming a parent is finding reliable information on childcare when you need it. For instance, getting to speak to a medical expert when your child is ill or finding out what toy is suitable for your child. One London-based father of an under-five, 36 year old Ilesh Kotecha, who was working as an investment banker in the City, thought of an Internet solution.

In Ilesh’s own words, “As a single parent, working long hours in the City, I found it hard to find reliable and readily available information on childcare. This lead to the idea of an online community to provide reliable information and services for parents of children in their formative years.” And so Smallfolk.com was born.

A first step was to find a reliable source of childcare information. Says Ilesh “No parent wants to compromise on their child’s health. So the quality and source of childcare information is very important. We approached Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), one of the most famous paediatric institutions in the world. The hospital’s fund raising arm, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSHCC), was looking for new ways to raise funds and we wanted access to the best source of paediatric information. We started to discuss how we might work together.”

Those discussions lasted six months. An important objective was to establish the fit in terms of values and goals between the hospital and Smallfolk.com. Great Ormond Street, after considering major commercial organisations, chose Smallfolk.com as an exclusive Internet partner.

By partnering with GOSHCC, Smallfolk.com now offers the most comprehensive source of online child health information available in the UK, with over 3,000 pages of information. The site features forums and on-line access to expert advice on a variety of topics including education, health and psychology for children in their formative years (0-5 years).

Smallfolk.com is now marketing a “Help Great Ormond Street Get Better” range of toiletries, approved by experts at GOSH and specially formulated for children. Online sales of these toiletries and other products at Smallfolk.com will help raise funds for the Hospital. For every £1 spent on products, Smallfolk.com will donate 5p from its own marketing budget to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSHCC). At the time of going to press, Smallfolk.com is trying to raise enough funds to purchase a Vital Signs Monitor for the Intensive Care Unit at Great Ormond Street.

Smallfolk.com also works at a local level with nurseries and playgroups throughout the UK, helping to raise funds for items such as outdoor equipment and toys. Many nurseries have signed up with Smallfolk.com and additionally parents can nominate their own child’s nursery as a beneficiary. Smallfolk.com can be reached at www.smallfolk.com or www.smallfolk.co.uk or at 020-8426-1887.
