Childcare
website donates vital signs monitor to Great Ormond Street Children's
Hospital
Smallfolk.com,
one of the UK's largest parenting and paediatric websites launched
in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity,
has donated a portable vital signs monitor worth £3,000 to Great
Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
Staff
nurse Polly Livermore is pictured
with GOSH patient Sinead Maughan, aged 10, using the machine. The
portable vital signs monitor measures a child's vital signs while
they are in transit from one department to another, and while a
child is being taken to theatre for surgery. The vital signs monitored
are heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels in the blood, body
temperature and carbon dioxide.
Each
year Great Ormond Street Hospital treats more than 100,000 young
children, suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening
conditions. The hospital aims to raise over £12 million every year
to update medical and surgical equipment and fund research into
childhood illnesses. For every £1 spent on products, Smallfolk.com
gives 5p towards vital equipment for the hospital's work with sick
children. Since the launch of the site on 26 June 2000, the company
has raised over £3,000 for GOSH.
Alec
Raven, Marketing Executive, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's
Charity, said 'Working with Smallfolk.com appealed to us because
of their commitment to helping children. The funds raised by Smallfolk.com
will contribute to updating the hospital's medical equipment and
will benefit both children and parents at Great Ormond Street Hospital.'
The
website provides parents with online access to expert childcare
advice and guidance on education, health, psychology and psychiatry
for children in their formative years (0-5 years). Smallfolk.com
can also offer practical help such as finding local nurseries and
child friendly places of interest or identifying useful National
or International child related institutions.
Co-founder
Ilesh Kotecha said, 'As a single parent working long hours in the
City, I found it difficult to find reliable and readily available
childcare information, so the idea of Smallfolk.com was born out
of need. Great Ormond Street Hospital was the ideal partner. They
provide high quality information and also enable us to support sick
children and their families in the process.'
